FAQ

  • How did this get started? Out of necessity!! Terri Matheis (Founder) writes, “ I was having lunch with a friend in April 2004, when a group of Red Hat Ladies entered the room. I smiled as I explained to my friend what the group was all about…'women over 50 who wanted to grow old wearing red hats and purple dresses -and have fun while doing so'.

As I sat with my friend, I realized that divorced women could use the very same network! While I appreciated my married friends, I had entered the world of the singles, and they had not. I knew that there had to be women, just like me, who did not have opportunities to meet single women within their given community and spent a great deal of time alone.

I was inspired, and as a result, the one-of-a-kind Sassy Pink Peppers was launched in September 2004 and a means by which to meet new single friends commenced!”
  • How did you come up with the name? “Sassy” is an attitude to be upbeat and positive, “Pink” is a feminine color, and “Peppers” was contributed by Terri’s then 13-year-old daughter, Molly.
  • Do you have a motto? Yes! “laugh, dance, move on”
  • Is this a male bashing group? NO WAY!! “Pepper Protocol” frowns on ex- (husband) bashing. It's really about moving on and not dwelling on past negatives.
  • Is this a support group?

Sassy Pink Peppers offers support through socializing. Our expertise is helping to restore the “FUN” in life by building new friendships, offering social outings, and creating a relaxed, kicked-back, hair loose, environment.

This element of restoring balance after a break-up is vital to a woman’s overall mental and physical well-being. Studies are increasingly proving the inherent need women possess to relieve stress through socialization with other women and to “tend” to one another’s emotional support.

“Women’s reliance on their female friends—and the benefit they believe they get from those friendships—crosses the lines of ethnicity, income and age.” As reported in the Los Angeles Times, by Melissa Healy. (July 2005)

Shelley E. Taylor, author of The Tending Instinct and a social neuroscientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, writes that women handle stress by relying on their female friends. This “tending instinct” is gaining scientific credibility as a factor in life longevity.

  • What is the age range of members? Women are between the ages of 28-67 (the majority of which are in their 40's and 50's).
  • What kind of activities do you do? It really depends on who makes up the chapter and their individual interests. Activities can range from brunch/lunch, happy hours, sporting activities to day trips or weekend excursions. “SPP” brainstorms with members to keep current, and on the cutting edge, of FUN. But the founders are just as proud of the time spent volunteering and the networking opportunities created by planning and running events.
  • Who can join? Any woman is eligible to join who has been involved in a long-term relationship that has ended. ”SPP” is made up primarily of those who are separated and legally divorced, but also those that ended long term live-in relationships, as well as those who have been widowed.
  • How can I join? The best way to join is to go to the Web site: http://www.sassypinkpeppers.com Click on the “Join” Page and proceed with the instructions. There is a $25 annual membership fee which can be paid by credit card on the secure VeriSign server.
  • Why a membership fee? We choose not to commercialize our organization and therefore, do not accept advertising dollars. Annual dues are contributed by members to cover the costs of a well-maintained website, out-sourced programs, secure credit services, and professional management! The fee also insures the Sassy Pink Pepper financial commitment to supporting the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
  • Outside of meeting other women, what other perks do you offer ? We have a message board; an internal e-mail system for the sole use of members; an Activities page with suggested books, movies, and things to do; guest authors and speakers through the site, and discounts on Sassy Pink Pepper merchandise.
  • What happens if a member gets married? A new designation of “Pepper Patron” will be held for those women who remarry but still want to support their friends.
  • Is there a similar group for men? Not at this time, but we are working on it!
  • How do the members feel about this group? Our members love being a part of this group and many of them have written wonderful letters to us, some of which can be viewed by clicking here.
